New Jersey's driver's licenses expire four years after the issue date. You have up to three years to renew yours after it expires but it is illegal to continue driving with it until you do. You must apply for a new license if you have missed the three-year grace period. Frequently Asked Questions. Handicap placard applications are submitted to the NJ police chief and not the New Jersey MVC, even though the $4 fee needs to be mailed to the MVC.
Renew Your Driver's License in Missouri
Before your driver's license expires in Missouri, you need to renew your license with the Department of Revenue (DOR) to continue driving legally in the state.

You can check your driver's license renewal status by contacting the MO DOR.
When to Renew Your MO Driver's License
Your Missouri driver's license expires on your birthday and is valid for:
- 3 years if you're 18 to 20 years old.
- 6 years if you're 21 thru 69 years old.
- 3 years if you're 70 years old or older.
- The length of your legal presence if you are not a U.S. citizen.
The MO DOR will send you a renewal notice at least 15 days before your driver's license expires.
You can renew your MO driver's license:
- In person.
- By mail (for military members and their dependents only).
Renewal requirements may vary based on the status of your driver's license, and whether it is:
- Valid.
- Expired.
- Suspended.
- Lost, damaged, or destroyed.
Valid Driver's License
If you hold a valid Missouri driver's license, you can renew it up to 6 months before it expires at your local Missouri DMV office.
Expired Driver's License
If your driver's license is expired, you can still renew it.
If it has been expired for more than 6 months, you'll need to pass a:
- Vision test.
- Road sign test.
- Written knowledge exam.
- Driving skills test.
Suspended Driver's License
If your Missouri driver's license is suspended you'll need to order your driver record from the MO DOR and pay a reinstatement fee before you can renew it.

Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Driver License
If your Missouri drivers license is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can still renew it if it expires within 6 months.

Renew a MO Driver's License
In Missouri, you must renew your driver's license in person. To do so, visit your local Missouri DOR office. You'll need:
- Proof of your name, birth date, and place of birth, such as your:
- U.S. passport.
- Certificate of citizenship.
- Immigration documents.
- Proof of your Social Security number (SSN), such as:
- Your Social Security card.
- A denial or status letter from Social Security Administration.
- Proof of your Missouri address, such as your:
- Utility bill.
- Pay check.
- Mortgage or rental agreement.

- To pass a vision exam.
- To pass a road signs test.

NOTE: If you are 65 years old or older and your Missouri driver's license has been expired for less than 6 months, you do not need to provide your U.S. birth certificate.
Military & Out-of-State Renewal by Mail
Military Members
Notice for Military Members Stationed in Germany
If you are currently stationed in Germany, please be aware that some states require you to have a valid U.S. driver's license in addition to your USAREUR license. Read our article for more information.
If you are an active duty military member or active duty military member's spouse/dependent stationed out of state, you can renew your Missouri drivers license by mail.
To renew by mail, you'll need:
- A completed Mail-In Driver License Application (Form 4317).
- Copies of your active-duty military documents or military ID.
- Proof of your identity, such as your:
- U.S. birth certificate.
- U.S. passport.
- U.S. military ID.
- Your Social Security number.
- Proof of your MO address, such as your:
- Utility bill.
- Voter registration card.
- Pay check.
- Payment. (See “Fees to Renew Your MO Driver's License' below.)
Mail the above to the address specified on the form.
Once the Missouri DOR receives your application, you should receive your new license within 10 days.
NOTE: If you plan to renew in person, you must provide your military discharge papers when you renew your license. An expired driver license cannot be used to drive, but you will be exempt from taking a written and driving test.

Military Member Exemptions
If your driver license expires while you're out of state, you can renew it when you return to Missouri without having to pass any tests:

- For up to 6 months after you are honorably discharged.
OR - Within 90 days of returning to the state.
You must renew your Missouri driver's license in person at a MO DMV office and bring your discharge papers and any other required documents (see the “In-Person Driver's License Renewal' section above).
Fees to Renew Your MO Driver's License
The cost of your MO driver license renewal depends on the number of years your card is valid for:
- 3 years: $21.
- 6 years: $42.
Debit or credit card will also be subject to a convenience fee.
Accepted Payment Methods
For mailed-in applications, the Missouri DMV accepts:
- Cashier's check.
- Money order.
- Traveler's check.
OR - Personal check.
NOTE: You must write your MO drivers license number on your check or money order.

New Jersey Registration Renewal Notice
As a reminder that your plate decals are about to expire, the MVC will send a renewal notice that includes:
- Your renewal fee (see below)
- Your registration renewal due date
- Your personal identification number (PIN), if eligible for online renewal
- An enclosed envelope for renewing by mail
Didn't Receive a NJ Registration Renewal Notice?
If you didn't receive a registration renewal notice, you can still renew in person (see below). If you'd like to learn why you didn't receive your notice, contact the MVC by e-mail or calling (609) 292-6500.
Have you recently moved? Make sure the MVC has your new address on file, otherwise future MVC correspondence will be sent to your old address.

NOTE: If you are not the owner listed on the title of your vehicle (i.e. leased vehicles) you may need to obtain legal permission to complete your registration renewal with a Power of Attorney from your leasing company. The Power of Attorney must be an original copy from the titled owner and include:
- The name of the lessee.
- A statement of authorization.
- The VIN, year, make and model of your vehicle.
Renew in Person
Renewing your New Jersey registration in person guarantees same-day service, and is required if you aren't eligible for online or mail renewal. To renew, visit your local MVC office with:
- Proper identification.
- One of the following documents:
―NJ registration renewal notice.
―Current registration certificate.
―License plate number. - Proof of car insurance.
- Cash, check, money order or credit card (American Express, Visa, MasterCard) to pay renewal fee.
Renew Online
To renew your NJ plates online, you'll need to have a renewal notice that includes a PIN located on the bottom right-hand corner. Once online, provide:
- Your PIN
- Your Social Security number
- Proof of car insurance
- Credit card information (American Express, Visa, MasterCard) to cover registration renewal costs.
NOTE: If you recently moved, you'll need to update your address before renewing. You will not be able to renew online if the date on the renewal noticed has passed. If you have lost your PIN, and your renewal notice hasn't expired, you can call the MVC at (609) 292-6500 for your PIN.
Renew by Mail
Return your registration renewal notice along with:
- Proof of auto insurance, if required
- Check or money order made payable to the NJMVC
If you've lost the enclosed envelope, mail to:

NOTE: It will take at least a week for the MVC to receive and process your application. If your registration is close to expiring, consider renewing in person for same-day service. Contact the NJ MVC to check the status of your registration renewal order.
New Jersey Registration Renewal Fees
NJ MVC registration renewal fees vary based on:
- Vehicle type
- Vehicle weight
- Vehicle year
Your renewal notice will indicate the amount you owe. For more detailed fee information, view the MVC's fee chart.
Discount Renewal Fees
If you're handicapped or 65 years old or older, the MVC offers a $7 discount off registration renewal fees.
Late Fees or Penalties
The New Jersey MVC does not charge a late fee for renewing your NJ plates after they expire. This does not mean, however, that you're free to renew whenever you choose. If you are caught driving with expired plates, you will be ticketed.
NJ Registration Renewal for Military Members
You do not have to renew your registration as long as you're an active member of the armed forces. This includes the National Guard and Reserves. Be sure to carry the military Extension Letter Administrative Order and military identification showing your active status while driving.
Service-Disabled and Blind Veterans in New Jersey
If you're a service-disabled or blind veteran, you may qualify for free car registration if you meet the following classifications:
- You're without eyesight due to combat and are eligible for state compensation under N.J.S.A. 38:18-1
- You currently have another combat-related disability and have qualified for a free car from the Veterans Administration (VA) and:
―You possess a valid NJ driver's license
―Your vehicle has been modified for safe operation
―You have auto insurance coverage

NJ Armed Forces Car Registration Refund
If you register your vehicle in another state while on active duty, you can apply for a refund on the remaining time left on your NJ registration. To apply, send:
- A Request for Refund letter explaining that you want a refund because of your military status.
- Proof of your active military status.
- A completed Refund Application (Form REFUND1). If you can't download it, call (609) 292-6500 or (609) 292-6500 to request an application be sent to you.
- The car's original title.
- The car's license plates.

NJ Emissions Inspection
Typically, vehicles registered in NJ must be tested every 2 years, but there are a number of exemptions. For more on this, visit our Emissions page.
NOTE: The NJ MVC does not send smog check reminders. It's your responsibility to know when your emissions sticker expires.
New Jersey Liability Insurance
NJ car insurance is mandatory. Without it, you cannot renew your vehicle registration. For more information on New Jersey's insurance laws and for local carriers, check out our Car Insurance page.
Replacement NJ Registration Certificates, Stickers, and License Plates
You may not drive without your registration certificate. If it's lost or damaged, get a duplicate registration certificate immediately.
You will need to apply for replacement NJ license plates if they're no longer legible or have gone missing.
